Dr. Robert Brooks is a psychologist on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and former Director of the Department of Psychology at McLean Hospital, a private psychiatric facility.  He has written extensively and lectured nationally and internationally to audiences of parents, educators, health care and mental health professionals, and business people about topics pertaining to motivation, resilience, self-esteem, family relationships, the qualities of effective leaders, and balancing our personal and professional lives.

He has received many awards for his work with children, adolescents, and adults with special needs, especially those with learning, attention, and behavioral struggles.  Among the 13 books he has authored or co-authored are The Self-Esteem Teacher; Raising Resilient Children; Raising a Self-Disciplined Child; Handbook of Resilience in Children; and The Power of Resilience: Achieving Balance, Confidence, and Personal Strength in Your Life.  Dr. Brooks’ web site is www.drrobertbrooks.com.

 

Morning Presentation:  8:00-12:30 PM
Audience:  Health Care and Mental Health Professionals, Other Professionals and Parents 

Title:  Nurturing Hope and Resilience: Changing the Negative Mindsets of Youth with Learning Challenges

Description:  In this presentation Dr. Brooks will describe a strength-based approach that health care and mental health professionals may apply for working with children and adolescents with learning struggles.  Using the concept of “mindsets” as a central focus, he will outline (a) the mindset of professionals who are effective in working with these youth, (b) the negative mindset that many of these children and adolescents possess, (c) the characteristics of the mindset of resilient youngsters, (d) the importance of identifying and reinforcing each youngster’s “islands of competence” and not just focusing on their “deficits,” and (e) specific strategies for nurturing a resilient mindset in children struggling with learning, including such qualities as motivation, responsibility, self-discipline, and resilience.

Learning Objectives:
After the presentation the participants will be able to identify:

  • The key characteristics of the mindset of professionals who are effective in working with children and adolescents with learning and attention struggles,
  • The importance of applying a strength-based approach in which each youngster’s “islands of competence” are identified and reinforced,
  • The characteristics if a “resilient mindset”, and
  • Specific strategies for developing a resilient mindset in children and adolescents with learning differences, including nurturing their motivation, self-discipline, responsibility, and hope. 

 

Evening Presentation:  6:00 PM-9:00 PM
Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Counselors and Other Professionals, Parents and Students 

Title:  The Power of Mindsets: Creating Motivating Environments for School Success

Description:  In this presentation Dr. Brooks will focus on the school environment and the importance of developing positive relationships between parents and educators for the success of students with learning and attention differences.  He will describe (a) the mindset of effective educators and parents, (b) the importance of empathy in understanding and responding to students, (c) the need to identify and reinforce each student’s “islands of competence,” (d) a framework for understanding the components of motivation, and (e) strategies for creating a “motivating environment” in schools in which learning, self-discipline, cooperation, responsibility, and resilience are nurtured.

Learning Objectives:
After the presentation the participants will be able to identify:

  • The key characteristics of the mindset of effective educators and parents,
  • Exercises to promote empathy in faculty,
  • The importance of identifying and reinforcing each student’s “islands of competence”,
  • A framework for understanding the components of motivation, and
  • Specific strategies for enhancing the motivation, learning, self-discipline, responsibility, and resilience in students with learning and attention differences. 

Certificate of Attendance will be given for use in earning CEU or CME credit.
